Our Key Highlights from 2021

  • Little Lambs was fully subscribed in 2021;

  • Applications for 2022 were again oversubscribed and more than 100 children could not be accommodated;

  • The staff team remain very committed and there have been no significant staff changes over the past years;

  • As part of our empowerment programme, two teachers are being sponsored to study for their Grade R teaching diplomas.

  • Little Lambs qualified to participate in The Learning Initiative programme, sponsored by the Department of Social Development. The programme assists the Grade R scholars and their teachers to achieve better performance.

  • In January 2022 we commenced with three candidates participating in the ORTSA internship programme sponsored by Investec. The programme provides for local matriculants to operate as Assistant Teachers at an Early Childhood Development Center while also attending courses at a Teachers Training College, enabling them to qualify as teachers.

  • Once again donors are sponsoring the E-pap feeding project.

  • We continue to have good and cooperative relationships with our neighbours - Silikamva High School, Hout Bay Primary School, Ikhaya le Themba and Sakhisizwe.

  • The COVID 19 pandemic continued to impact operations at school, resulting in reduced attendance and hence lower than budgeted income from school fees and government grants. Parents are challenged with lower income and in some cases unemployment, resulting in non-payment or reduced payment of school fees.

  • Due to this Little Lambs is increasingly more dependent on donations and sponsorship to make ends meet.

  • The main areas of concern are:

    − increasing amount of school fee subsidies and outstanding payments

    − significant inflation of costs for food and services;

    − Council charges for water and electricity.

  • For essential project and maintenance work, we try to secure sponsorship or donations towards these.

  • In 2021 we received sponsorship of over Rand 500 000 from Kinderhilfe Kapstadt for a number of improvement projects.

  • In 2021 we were successful with our application for funds from the National Lotteries Commission, which donated Rand 232 000 towards the operating deficit at Little Lambs.

Our 2022 Goals

  • For some years we have been encouraged by the community to provide ‘After-school Care’ facilities at Little Lambs so that the children that leave primary school after lunch have somewhere safe to go to do their homework and play until their parents can collect them in the evenings. Kinderhilfe Kapstadt is eager to get this project off the ground and has committed to the funding of the necessary buildings. The Western Cape Government Public Works Department, and our landlords, have now given their approval that enables us to proceed with this project. Architects have been assigned to develop plans for a six-classroom facility to be built on the Little Lambs property. It is anticipated that this project can be completed by the end of 2023.

  • We hope to secure sponsorship to erect a Wendy house to accommodate the children participating in The Living Learning programme

  • We obviously are very concerned regarding the ever-increasing funding requirements for Little Lambs.

  • This year’s target is to raise donations of about Rand 500 000 to meet the budgeted costs.

  • In this regard SEEDS Trust has embarked on additional approaches to potential donors and sponsors

  • Hopefully, our historic donors and sponsors will also continue to support us.

Budget Summary

The appended data reflects the financials for the past years and the budget for 2022.

  • Operationally 2021/2022 was a difficult period.

  • The financial impact of COVID-related expenses and the more recent commercial impacts of the Ukraine war are felt by everyone, including our sponsors. Fortunately, our donors and sponsors, particularly Kinderhilfe Kapstadt, have continued their support in keeping us going.

  • Donations from SEEDS Trust and Kinderhilfe Kapstadt, in support of the Little Lambs operations during 2021, amounted to Rand 407 663.

    For 2022 we budgeted to accommodate 270 children and set the school fees at Rand 530/550 per month.

    School fees generally make up about 40% of Little Lambs operating costs.

    To date, we are facing lower than budgeted fee payments.

    The grant payments from the Department of Social Development and Department of Education generally contribute another 40% of the operating costs of Little Lambs.
